Hyvä is a frontend theme for Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce that replaces the default Luma storefront stack with Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS. It keeps Magento's server-rendered pages, layout XML and PHP templates, but removes RequireJS, Knockout.js and most jQuery from the storefront, which makes pages much lighter. Since November 10, 2025 the core Hyvä Theme has been free and open source; Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä UI, Hyvä Enterprise and Hyvä Commerce remain paid products.
This guide explains how Hyvä works, exactly what is free and what is paid after the licence change, how extension compatibility works, and a go/no-go checklist for deciding whether to move.
How Hyvä works
A standard Luma storefront loads dozens of JavaScript modules through RequireJS and renders interactive parts with Knockout.js. That stack is flexible but heavy, and it often hurts Largest Contentful Paint and Interaction to Next Paint on mid-range phones.
Hyvä starts from a different premise:
- Alpine.js handles interactivity with small, inline components instead of a module loader.
- Tailwind CSS replaces LESS, so only the CSS classes a page actually uses are shipped.
- Magento stays in charge of rendering. Layout XML, blocks, view models and PHTML templates work as before, so backend developers keep most of their Magento knowledge.
- It is not headless. There is no separate JavaScript application or API layer to run, which keeps hosting and SEO simple.
Hyvä supports Magento 2.4.4-p9, 2.4.5-p8, 2.4.6-p7 and 2.4.7-p1 and later, according to its documentation (checked November 2026). Tailwind builds need Node.js on development machines, not on production servers.
What is free and what is paid since November 2025
On November 6, 2025 Hyvä announced that the Hyvä Theme would be relicensed under the OSL3 and AFL3 open-source licences and freely available from November 10, 2025 through GitHub and free Composer keys. Before that, the theme itself required a paid licence. The table summarises the position as stated in that announcement.
| Product | Status | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Hyvä Theme | Free, open source (OSL3/AFL3) | The core storefront theme and its supporting modules |
| Hyvä UI | Paid, sold per store; see hyva.io for current pricing | A library of ready-made Tailwind components such as headers, menus and product sliders |
| Hyvä Checkout | Paid; see hyva.io for current pricing | A rebuilt checkout using Magewire, with its own payment and shipping integrations |
| Hyvä Enterprise | Paid subscription | Hyvä's package for Adobe Commerce: includes Hyvä Commerce and adds support for Adobe Commerce features such as B2B and content staging |
| Hyvä Commerce | Paid subscription | Hyvä's all-in-one package for Magento Open Source: the theme, Checkout and UI plus a content management system and admin improvements |
Prices are the figures Hyvä published with the November 2025 announcement. Hyvä's product pages have shown different figures for some products since, so check hyva.io before you budget. Existing theme licensees kept premium support and UI access under the change.
The practical effect: the licence fee is no longer the reason to delay Hyvä. The real cost is the rebuild work and extension compatibility.
Extension compatibility: the part that decides the budget
Because Hyvä removes RequireJS and Knockout.js, any extension that adds storefront JavaScript or templates written for Luma will not work as-is. Backend-only extensions, such as ERP connectors or export tools, are unaffected.
Hyvä handles this with compatibility modules: small packages that re-implement an extension's frontend in Alpine.js and Tailwind. They come from three places:
- The extension vendor, who may ship Hyvä support in the main package.
- Hyvä's public compatibility tracker on gitlab.hyva.io, which lists modules with community or vendor compatibility packages and their status.
- Your own team or agency, when nothing exists.
Count the gaps before you commit. Each missing compatibility module is either a development task, a replacement extension or a feature you drop.
Checkout and payments
You can run Hyvä with the Luma checkout as a fallback, or use the paid Hyvä Checkout. Hyvä's documentation lists integrations for many payment providers, including Adobe Payment Services, Adyen, Stripe, PayPal, Braintree and Mollie. Confirm the specific integration version you need, because some integrations were built for Hyvä Checkout 1.x. If checkout conversion is a priority, read our guide to Magento checkout optimization before choosing.
Where Hyvä fits, and where it does not
- Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce on-premises or on cloud infrastructure: the natural home for Hyvä.
- Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service: Adobe states that it does not support Luma storefronts and uses Commerce Storefront on Edge Delivery Services. Hyvä is a theme for Magento's server-rendered storefront, so it is not the route there.
- Headless builds: Hyvä is an alternative to headless, not a part of it.
If you are still choosing between Hyvä and lighter-touch options, our Hyvä vs Breeze vs Luma comparison gives a decision matrix by budget, extensions and team skills.
Performance: what to expect honestly
Hyvä removes most of the JavaScript weight that holds Luma stores back, so it usually raises the performance ceiling. It does not fix everything. Large unoptimized images, third-party tags, slow hosting or uncached pages will still fail Core Web Vitals, where Google's "good" thresholds are LCP at or under 2.5 seconds, INP at or under 200 milliseconds and CLS at or under 0.1. Measure field data before and after. Our Magento Core Web Vitals guide covers what to fix beyond the theme.
Go/no-go checklist
Answer each line. Mostly "go" answers mean Hyvä is likely worth it now; several "no-go" answers mean fix those first or choose another route.
| Question | Go | No-go or wait |
|---|---|---|
| Are you on a supported Magento version (2.4.4-p9 or later in the listed lines)? | Yes, or upgrading first | Older release with no upgrade planned |
| How many extensions add storefront code? | Few, or most have compatibility modules | Many with no compatibility module |
| Is a redesign due anyway? | Yes; rebuild once on Hyvä | Design was refreshed recently and must stay pixel-identical |
| Are you moving to Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service soon? | No | Yes; plan Edge Delivery instead |
| Does your team know Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js, or can it learn? | Yes, or an agency will lead | No capacity to learn or hire |
| Is the checkout heavily customized? | Standard or moderately customized | Deep custom logic with no budget to port it |
| Do you have performance data showing frontend weight is the bottleneck? | Yes, field data shows poor LCP or INP | Slowness is server-side or from third-party scripts |
| Can you test on a staging copy with real data? | Yes | No staging environment |
How a Hyvä move usually runs
- Audit: list extensions with storefront code, check compatibility, and record current Core Web Vitals.
- Design: decide whether to replicate the current look or redesign with Hyvä UI components.
- Build: create the theme, port custom templates and install or write compatibility modules.
- Checkout: choose Hyvä Checkout or the Luma fallback and test every payment and shipping method.
- Test and launch: regression, accessibility and performance testing on staging, then a monitored release.
FAQ
Is Hyvä really free now?
The Hyvä Theme is free and open source since November 10, 2025. Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä UI, Hyvä Enterprise and Hyvä Commerce are still paid.
Does Hyvä work with Adobe Commerce?
Yes, on-premises and on Adobe's cloud infrastructure. Adobe Commerce-only features such as B2B need Hyvä Enterprise compatibility. The SaaS Cloud Service uses a different storefront.
Will Hyvä improve my SEO?
Indirectly. Faster pages help Core Web Vitals and user experience, and Hyvä keeps server-rendered HTML that search engines read easily. It does not replace content, structure and technical SEO work.
Next step
If the checklist points to "go", the work is a focused rebuild rather than a licence purchase. Mistri's Hyvä theme development service covers extension audits and compatibility work, and our Magento theme redesign service fits when the move comes with a new design.
