An accessible product page with focus outline, contrast check and the accessibility symbol

Ecommerce accessibility means people with disabilities can find products, use filters and complete checkout with a keyboard, screen reader, magnifier or voice control. For stores selling to EU consumers it is also a legal requirement under the European Accessibility Act since 28 June 2025, measured against WCAG.

WCAG in four principles

Every WCAG success criterion sits under one of these. Source: W3C WCAG 2.2.

PerceivableAlt text, captions and enough colour contrast.
OperableEverything works with a keyboard, with visible focus.
UnderstandableClear labels, instructions and error messages.
RobustClean markup that assistive technology can read.

Why it matters

What accessibility means for sales and compliance

More customersPeople with disabilities and older shoppers can complete orders without help.
Lower legal riskReady for the European Accessibility Act and for accessibility complaints elsewhere.
Better UX for allClear focus, labels and contrast help every shopper, on every device.

What the European Accessibility Act means for stores

Since 28 June 2025, the European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) requires ecommerce services sold to consumers in the EU to be accessible. The harmonised standard, EN 301 549, points to WCAG 2.1 level AA; we test against WCAG 2.2 AA, which includes it. Microenterprises (fewer than 10 staff and no more than EUR 2 million turnover) are exempt for services. Each EU country enforces the Act.

Questions before you book

Frequently asked questions

Does the European Accessibility Act apply to my store?

If you sell to consumers in the EU and are not a microenterprise, it very likely does, even if your company is based outside the EU. Ask your legal adviser to confirm for your business.

Is Magento accessible out of the box?

Partly. Luma, Hyvä and Breeze all need checking, and extensions, content and customisations often introduce new issues.

Will an accessibility plugin fix everything?

No. Overlay widgets cannot fix missing labels, keyboard traps or unclear checkout errors in your code. We fix those in the theme.

Will accessibility fixes change our design?

Mostly not visibly. Many fixes are in markup, labels and focus handling; where colors or contrast must change, we propose options that keep your brand.

How do we stay accessible after the fixes?

New templates and extensions are checked before release, and we can retest on a schedule as part of a support retainer.

Can every shopper complete an order?

Send us your store URL. We will test the key shopping tasks with a keyboard and a screen reader.
