ChatGPT shopping is the product discovery experience inside ChatGPT: when someone asks for product advice, ChatGPT can show product results with images, prices and a list of merchants that sell each item. OpenAI says these product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads. Merchants show up when ChatGPT can read accurate data about their products, from their own website, from third-party data providers, or from a product feed sent directly to OpenAI. As of November 2026, purchases are completed on the merchant's own site or checkout after the shopper clicks through.
How ChatGPT shopping works today (November 2026)
The experience has changed several times since product results first appeared in ChatGPT search, so here is the current picture from OpenAI's own pages:
- Discovery first. On March 24, 2026, OpenAI rolled out a richer shopping experience with visual browsing, image uploads, conversational refinement and side-by-side comparisons to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users.
- Checkout on your site. In the same announcement, OpenAI said the first version of Instant Checkout (buying inside ChatGPT) had not offered the flexibility it wanted, so it is letting merchants use their own checkout while it concentrates on discovery. OpenAI's Help Center now describes product results as linking to sites where shoppers can learn more or purchase.
- Apps for deeper integrations. Merchants that want a native experience can build ChatGPT apps. Walmart launched one with account linking, loyalty and Walmart payments.
- Ads are separate. OpenAI's Help Center says ads in ChatGPT are separate from product results.

Where ChatGPT gets product information
According to OpenAI's Help Center, the list of merchants shown for a product is generated from merchant and product metadata supplied by third-party providers or directly by merchants, and merchants are ranked on factors like availability, price, quality and whether they are the maker or primary seller of the item. In practice there are three routes in:
- Your website. OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, reads public pages so they can appear in ChatGPT's search features. Structured data and clear product content help it understand what it finds.
- Platform catalogs and data providers. OpenAI says Shopify merchants' product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog. OpenAI also names third-party providers such as Salesforce and Stripe as delivery paths for other merchants.
- A direct product feed. OpenAI publishes a Product Feed Spec under the Agentic Commerce Protocol. OpenAI's developer docs say onboarding product feeds is currently available to approved partners, who apply through a form.
OpenAI has not published a ranking formula. What it has published shows that accurate metadata (price, availability, identity of the seller), reviews and access to your pages are the inputs you control.
Merchant visibility checklist
Work through these four areas. Each item notes the source behind it so you can check details yourself.
| Area | What to do | Why it matters (source) |
|---|---|---|
| Site access | Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt; make sure your firewall or bot protection does not block it | OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links (OpenAI crawler docs) |
| Site access | Decide separately on GPTBot, which crawls for model training | OpenAI treats the two bots independently; blocking GPTBot does not remove you from search (OpenAI crawler docs) |
| Site access | Keep key product information in the HTML, not only in scripts or images | Crawlers read product pages directly, and ChatGPT summarizes reviews from public websites |
| Feeds | Produce a full-catalog feed in OpenAI's format (Parquet preferred; gzipped JSONL, CSV or TSV also accepted) with the nine required fields: item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability, price | OpenAI Product Feed Spec |
| Feeds | Add GTIN and MPN where they exist, variant grouping (group_id), shipping and returns fields | Optional fields help ChatGPT match your offer to the right product (OpenAI Product Feed Spec) |
| Feeds | Send full snapshots at least daily, and update price and availability when a sale starts or ends | The spec recommends at least daily snapshots and says sale-window and availability dates do not schedule changes |
| Feeds | Apply for direct feed access, or confirm your platform or feed provider supports ChatGPT | Direct onboarding is for approved partners (OpenAI developer docs) |
| Structured data | Add valid Product, Offer and AggregateRating structured data to product pages | Machine-readable price, availability and ratings; also required for Google rich results |
| Structured data | Keep page data, feed data and checkout prices identical | Mismatches erode trust in your listings across every channel |
| Reviews | Collect genuine reviews and include review_count and star_rating in the feed | Both fields are in the OpenAI feed spec; fake or AI-written reviews are prohibited in the US under the FTC's 2024 rule |
| Reviews | Answer common questions on the page: sizing, materials, compatibility, delivery times | Assistants answer comparison questions from page content |
| Policies | Publish clear shipping and returns policies and reflect them in the feed's returns fields | Return terms are part of the feed spec and of shoppers' comparisons |

A ChatGPT product feed from Magento
Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source do not produce OpenAI's feed format out of the box, but the mapping from Magento data is straightforward:
item_id: the child SKU for each variant.group_id: the parent configurable SKU, withlisting_has_variationsset to true and the selected options invariant_dict, so variants are grouped.url: the product URL, ideally with the variant pre-selected.priceandsale_price: final prices for the target store view, formatted as amount plus currency (for example79.99 USD).availability: from salable quantity, using the spec's values such asin_stockorbackorder.seller_name: your store name as shoppers know it.
Generate the feed with a feed extension that supports the format or a small custom module, and deliver a full snapshot at least daily, more often if prices and stock move quickly. Start with a small sample of around 100 items, as OpenAI suggests, and validate it before sending the full catalog.
What not to do
- Do not block OAI-SearchBot by accident through a blanket AI-bot block in your CDN or firewall.
- Do not stuff product titles with keywords. The feed spec suggests concise titles of around 150 characters at most.
- Do not let feeds go stale. Out-of-date prices or stock frustrate shoppers who click through expecting what ChatGPT showed them.
- Do not expect paid placement to fix poor data. OpenAI's feed spec has a separate flag for ads eligibility, but organic product results are not ads.
How to tell whether it is working
- Check analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com and tag any links you control.
- Search ChatGPT for your main products and categories regularly and note which merchants appear.
- Track feed errors and warnings once you have direct feed access.
- Compare conversion of ChatGPT referrals with other channels; these visitors may arrive further along in their research.
FAQ
Does it cost anything to appear in ChatGPT shopping results?
OpenAI states that product results are not ads. Appearing organically does not require payment. Paid ad formats are a separate product with their own rules and availability.
Do I need to be on Shopify?
No. Shopify merchants are covered through Shopify Catalog. Other merchants can rely on their website being crawled, use a feed provider, or apply for direct feed access.
Can shoppers buy inside ChatGPT?
Not through a general ChatGPT checkout as of November 2026. OpenAI's most recent statement (March 24, 2026) is that merchants use their own checkout while it focuses on discovery. Retailers can build ChatGPT apps with their own purchase flows, as Walmart has.
Is this the same as SEO?
It overlaps heavily. Crawl access, structured data, accurate product content and reviews matter for both.
Getting your store visible
Start with site access and structured data, then build a feed. Mistri's agentic commerce services cover feeds and AI-channel readiness for Adobe Commerce and Magento, and our Magento SEO services handle the crawlability and structured data it all depends on.
