Must-Have Magento 2 Extensions in 2026 (and Ones to Avoid)

The Magento extensions worth paying for in 2026 are the ones that connect your store to other systems or add capability your business depends on: payments, tax, shipping, search, reviews, ERP and PIM connectors, and B2B tools on Magento Open Source. The ones to avoid are extensions that duplicate features now in core, such as admin two-factor authentication, reCAPTCHA, Page Builder or multi-source inventory, and old "speed" modules that a modern frontend like Hyvä makes unnecessary. Whatever you buy, vet the vendor and the code first, because every extension becomes part of your upgrade work.

This guide lists the categories worth paying for, the features you no longer need an extension for, and a vetting checklist you can use on any module.

Why fewer extensions is usually better

Every module you install has to be tested at each Magento release and security patch, may need a Hyvä compatibility module, and can conflict with other modules that change the same classes. Stores with many third-party extensions often find that extension compatibility, not core code, drives much of the upgrade effort. So the question is not only "is this extension good?" but "is it worth maintaining for the next three to five years?"

Categories worth paying for

These categories solve real problems that core Magento either does not cover or covers only in a basic way. We list categories rather than specific products because the right vendor depends on your country, systems and frontend.

CategoryWhy it is worth itWhat to look for
Payment provider modulesCard, wallet and local payment methods, with tokenization and 3-D SecureMaintained by the payment provider itself; Hyvä Checkout and headless support; PCI scope kept low
Tax calculationAccurate tax across states or countries, which core rules cannot keep up withIntegration with a tax service; exemption certificates for B2B
Shipping and fulfillmentLive rates, labels, delivery dates and pickup pointsCarrier coverage in your markets; works with multi-source inventory
Site search and merchandisingBetter relevance, synonyms and merchandising than default OpenSearch configurationOn Adobe Commerce, compare with the included Live Search first
Reviews and user-generated contentRicher reviews, photos, Q&A and syndicationValid structured data; light frontend script
ERP, PIM, OMS and CRM connectorsKeep products, prices, stock and orders in syncQueue-based sync, error logs and alerts, field mapping without code
B2B features on Open SourceCompany accounts, quotes, quick order and customer-specific pricingCompare total cost with Adobe Commerce, which includes these
Email marketing and consentCustomer and order data in your email platform; cookie consent that matches your marketsServer-side events; consent before tracking
SEO tooling where gaps existFine control over canonicals, layered navigation indexing and hreflangCheck core settings first; avoid modules that rewrite every URL
Fraud screeningOrder risk scoring and chargeback protectionWorks with your payment provider; no checkout slowdown

For anything that encodes how your business works, such as pricing, configurators or approval flows, consider whether a custom module is a better long-term choice. Our build vs buy guide for Magento extensions has a framework and a total cost checklist.

Features now in core: extensions to avoid

Many extensions were essential on Magento 2.2 or 2.3 and are now redundant. If your store still runs them, removing them reduces upgrade work. Versions below are from Adobe's release notes.

FeatureNow in core sinceWhat to do
Admin two-factor authenticationRequired for the Admin since 2.4.0Remove third-party 2FA modules; configure core 2FA
Google reCAPTCHA for forms and admin loginConfigured in the Admin under Security (Google reCAPTCHA Storefront and Admin Panel) in current 2.4.x; Place Order and payment endpoints added in 2.4.1Use the core reCAPTCHA settings under Stores > Configuration > Security
Page Builder (drag-and-drop content)Bundled in Magento Open Source since 2.4.3Replace older page-builder extensions where content allows
Multi-source inventory and in-store pickupInventory Management (multi-source) is core in 2.4.x; in-store pickup added in 2.4.0Avoid separate multi-warehouse stock modules unless you need ERP-level rules
Searchable media galleryEnabled by default since 2.4.1Drop basic media manager extensions
Login as CustomerCore since 2.4.0 (listed as seller-assisted shopping in the release notes)Remove third-party impersonation modules
Braintree paymentsBundled since 2.4.0Use the bundled module or your provider's official one, not both
Live Search and Product RecommendationsAdobe-run SaaS services for Adobe Commerce; Adobe's Live Search docs say it is included in the licence. As of November 2026 Adobe says Commerce Optimizer capabilities replace these separate extensions, so check how Adobe packages them for youOn Adobe Commerce, test them before buying search or recommendation modules
B2B, gift cards, store credit, rewards, RMAIncluded in Adobe CommerceOn Adobe Commerce, use native features instead of extensions

Extensions Hyvä makes unnecessary

If you move to Hyvä, some frontend extensions lose their purpose:

  • JavaScript bundling, minification and "page speed" modules built for RequireJS. Hyvä removes RequireJS altogether.
  • Lazy-loading and critical-CSS modules. Hyvä and Tailwind ship only the CSS a page uses; native lazy loading covers images.
  • jQuery-based sliders and widgets. Hyvä UI and Alpine.js components replace most of them.
  • AMP modules. A fast Hyvä storefront usually makes a separate AMP version unnecessary.

Every storefront extension you keep needs a Hyvä compatibility module. Mistri's Hyvä theme development service includes that compatibility review.

Extension vetting checklist

Use this before buying anything. Most problem modules fail several of these checks.

Vendor and update history

  • Published compatibility with your current Magento and PHP versions and the next version you plan to run (for example 2.4.9 on PHP 8.5).
  • Regular releases over the last 12 months, with a readable changelog.
  • Clear support terms and renewal pricing; you know what happens if you stop renewing.
  • Listing on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace, where extensions pass Adobe's Extension Quality Program checks (malware scan, code checks, installation and Varnish tests, manual QA). Useful as a baseline, not proof of fit.

Code quality

  • Installs with Composer, not by copying files into app/code.
  • Passes the Magento Coding Standard without serious violations.
  • Uses plugins and observers instead of class preferences that replace core classes. See Magento plugins vs observers for why this matters.
  • Uses declarative schema for database changes.
  • No encoded or obfuscated code you cannot review.

Hyvä and frontend support

  • Vendor-supplied Hyvä compatibility, or an entry in Hyvä's compatibility tracker.
  • Headless or GraphQL support if you run, or plan, a headless storefront.
  • No heavy scripts loaded on every page for a feature used on one.

Runtime behavior

  • Keeps pages cacheable in full page cache and Varnish.
  • Heavy work runs in cron or the message queue, not during page loads.
  • No noticeable slowdown on category, product or checkout pages when profiled on staging with real data.
  • Stores only the personal data it needs and supports deletion requests.

Review what you already have

The best extension work is often removal. List every enabled module, mark what each does and who uses it, and check it against the "now in core" table. Our Magento store audit checklist includes ten extension checks you can run in an afternoon.

FAQ

How many extensions is too many?

There is no fixed number. Ten poorly maintained extensions can cost more than forty clean ones. What matters is that each module is needed, maintained and compatible with your next upgrade.

Are free extensions safe?

Some are excellent, some are abandoned. Apply the same vetting checklist; price says little about quality.

Should we use the Adobe Commerce Marketplace only?

The Marketplace adds a quality baseline, but good vendors also sell directly and through Composer repositories. Vet the code either way.

When nothing fits

If no extension fits your process without heavy changes, a focused custom module is often cheaper over its lifetime. Mistri's Magento extension development service builds modules on Adobe's documented patterns, so they stay upgradeable.
