An Adobe Commerce certification proves that a person passed a timed, proctored exam on a defined area of the platform: backend development, front-end development, business configuration or architecture. It is good evidence of platform knowledge and vocabulary. It does not prove that someone writes maintainable code, can debug a production incident, or has delivered a project like yours. When hiring a Magento developer, treat certification as one signal, verify that it is current, and test the rest directly.
The current Adobe Commerce certification list
Adobe groups Commerce certifications into three levels: Professional, Expert and Master. As of November 2026, Adobe's certification overview lists seven credentials. The summaries below follow the section outlines on each exam's public page on the Adobe Certification Portal. Exams and objectives change when Adobe revises them: the portal shows the current Front-End Developer Professional and Expert exams as retiring, with no scheduling after October 25, 2026, so check the portal for the current exam before relying on any detail.
| Certification | Level | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Commerce Business Practitioner Professional | Professional | Admin knowledge of catalog and products, promotions, orders, payments, shipping and tax, customers, and store features | Any development skill; strategy or project leadership |
| Adobe Commerce Developer Professional | Professional | Module structure, plugins and observers, cron, indexing, caching, attributes, catalog and checkout customization basics, and Cloud setup | Experience with production scale, performance or complex integrations |
| Adobe Commerce Front-End Developer Professional | Professional | Themes, layout XML and templates, LESS styles, JavaScript and admin configuration on the classic storefront stack | Skill with Hyvä, headless or Edge Delivery storefronts, unless the person shows it separately |
| Adobe Commerce Business Practitioner Expert | Expert | Broader commerce decisions: merchandising and promotions, checkout and orders, B2B and inventory, compliance, analytics and systems architecture | Ability to translate requirements into a working technical design |
| Adobe Commerce Developer Expert | Expert | Advanced backend: caching, plugins and observers, multi-site, security features, indexing, SaaS and App Builder integrations, APIs, message queues and Cloud | Code quality habits such as tests, readable code and upgrade-safe customization |
| Adobe Commerce Front-End Developer Expert | Expert | Advanced theming, layout XML, LESS and JavaScript (RequireJS, mixins, Knockout), plus Page Builder and front-end optimization | Accessibility, design judgment or Core Web Vitals results on a real store |
| Adobe Commerce Architect Master | Master | Solution design and integrations, reviewing and refactoring customizations, performance and scalability, and Commerce and Cloud setup and deployment | That the person has led an implementation of your size, or will be on your project day to day |
Older Magento-branded certificates from before the Adobe rebrand still appear on CVs. They show the person studied the platform at the time, but they cover older versions and are not the current credentials.
How to verify a certification
Do not accept a logo on a CV or agency website as proof. Adobe issues credentials through its Certification Portal, and holders can share a verification page from their account. Ask the candidate for that link and check three things:
- The exact credential name matches the role. A Business Practitioner credential is not a developer credential.
- The status is active, not expired. Adobe certifications are time-limited and verification pages show the status. Adobe has been changing its renewal process, so an expired credential is not automatically a red flag, but it does mean the knowledge was tested some time ago.
- The name on the credential matches the person you are hiring, not just someone at the agency.
For agencies, certifications held by individuals are separate from Adobe's partner program. Ask who on the proposed team holds which credential, rather than counting badges for the whole company. Our guide to choosing a Magento agency covers the rest of the agency evaluation.
What certifications cannot tell you
Certification exams test whether someone knows how the platform works. Hiring decisions depend on whether they use that knowledge well. These gaps are worth testing directly:
- Judgment on extension points. Knowing that plugins and observers exist is exam material. Knowing when an around plugin will cause trouble, or when an observer is the cleaner choice, is experience. Our explainer on Magento plugins vs observers makes a good basis for an interview question.
- Upgrade-safe habits. Do they override core classes with preferences casually, or reach for documented extension points first?
- Debugging. Can they find why a cache is not being hit, why an indexer is stuck, or why checkout fails only for one payment method?
- Modern storefronts. Exams focus on the platform's own stack. Hyvä and headless front ends need separate evidence, and App Builder and Edge Delivery Services appear only as smaller parts of some Expert exam outlines.
- Communication. No exam measures whether someone explains trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
A practical hiring check that uses certifications properly
- Screen: treat a current, relevant certification as a plus that speeds up screening, not as a requirement. Some excellent Magento developers have never sat an exam.
- Verify: ask for the verification link for any credential they claim.
- Review code: ask for a module they wrote (open source or anonymized) and look for tests, dependency injection, use of service contracts and sensible naming.
- Paid task: a small, time-boxed task close to your real work, such as adding a field to checkout or a REST endpoint with ACL, reviewed together afterwards.
- Scenario interview: walk through a real incident ("the site slows down every day at 2 a.m.") and listen for how they narrow it down.
- References: ask previous clients or managers about reliability, communication and how upgrades went.
The hiring Magento developers guide covers in-house versus agency versus freelance options and where certifications fit in each.
Which certification matters for which role
- Backend or extension developer: Developer Professional at minimum; Developer Expert for senior hires who will design modules and integrations, the kind of work involved in Magento extension development.
- Front-end developer: Front-End Developer Professional or Expert for classic themes, plus a portfolio for Hyvä or headless work.
- Solution or technical lead: Architect Master is the strongest signal, combined with references for projects of similar complexity.
- Merchandiser, project manager or consultant: Business Practitioner Professional or Expert shows they understand what the admin can do without custom code.
FAQ
Is Adobe Commerce certification required to work on Magento Open Source?
No. The exams cover concepts shared by both editions plus Adobe Commerce features. Many Open Source developers are uncertified, so rely on code review and references.
Does an agency need certified developers?
It is a useful signal, but ask which certified people will actually work on your project and verify their credentials individually.
Do Adobe certifications cover Hyvä or headless storefronts?
Adobe's exams focus on Adobe's own platform and storefront technologies. Hyvä is a third-party theme with its own documentation, and headless work depends on general front-end skills, so ask for a portfolio and a short code sample for those.
How hard are the exams?
Adobe's exam pages recommend up to about a year of hands-on experience for Professional exams, roughly one to three years for Expert exams (the Developer Expert page asks for at least two), and three to five years of leading projects for the Architect Master. In practice, passing the Expert or Master exams without real project experience is hard.
